What the Sail Looks Like
The Philadelphia Cup Regatta puts more than 30 sailboats on the Delaware River off Center City on Saturday, October 3, from 14-foot Lasers up to keelboats around 30 feet, racing short legs with the skyline and the Ben Franklin Bridge behind them. Liberty Sailing Club, Riverton Yacht Club and the Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia host it, and it’s the only sailing regatta in the city.
There are two sailings. The first runs 10:00a to 12:30p, out for the 10:25a first warning signal and the morning starts. The second runs 1:30p to 4:00p, through the afternoon racing and the finishes. No start goes off after 3:30p, so both sailings see the fleet racing.
You watch from the water, with six seats per sailing. Come on your own or book all six for your group. Our crew runs the boat and calls the race as it unfolds: the starts, the fleet working upwind and down, the race committee boats at the marks.

We meet at the Phila Sail location on Google Maps, just south of the Independence Seaport Museum along the Penn’s Landing waterfront. Plan to arrive ten to twenty minutes before your sailing so the captain can run through the safety brief and cast off on time. Seats are $175. The sailing runs rain or shine, and tickets are final. If the Regatta is postponed, your ticket is honored on the rescheduled race date. The full policy is at checkout. Bring non-spray sunscreen, a hat, a jacket and soft-soled shoes, since October air on the river usually runs a few degrees cooler than the dock.
